The Willows School
Head Teacher - Charlie Taylor
We are a Primary Special School for children with Behavioural, Emotional and Social Difficulties from across the London Borough of Hillingdon.
Many of our children have been excluded from their local primary and infant schools. This makes it difficult for them to take advantage of the extended schools facilities in their own local communities. Initially we addressed this by using our Friday afternoon sessions as ‘clubs’ time. The children enjoyed varied activities including sports, den building, pottery, woodwork, cookery, horse riding, photography and art.
Whilst the content of the clubs was excellent it was difficult to create a different atmosphere from school. We felt our children would benefit from relating to adults in a different, more relaxed role.
We negotiated with Special Needs Transport about the feasibility of keeping all our children after school for one hour, one day a week.
We consulted with the parents and carers of our children, all of whom approved of the suggestion.
We now have after school clubs running on Thursdays from 3:00 to 4:00pm.
The children enjoy challenging fun activities, including Lets Get Cooking, Big Art Club and Games. All children attend clubs, though participation is optional and we make refreshments available to keep their energy levels up!
